People often assume accountants spend their days looking at spreadsheets, tax returns and sets of accounts.
And to some extent, that’s true.
But after more than 35 years of working with business owners, I’ve come to realise something.
We don’t really work with numbers.
We work with stories.
Every client who walks through our door has a story to tell.
The builder who started with nothing more than a van, a toolbox and a determination to provide for his family.
The café owner who remortgaged her house to pursue a dream.
The consultant who left a secure corporate career to build something of their own.
The husband and wife who spent years growing a business together before passing it on to the next generation.
The landlord who bought a single property and slowly built a portfolio.
The entrepreneur who took a chance when everyone else said it would never work.
These are not accounting records.
These are stories.
Stories of ambition.
Stories of courage.
Stories of sacrifice.
Stories of resilience.
Stories of success.
And sometimes, stories of failure, disappointment and having the strength to start again.
For over three decades, I have had a front-row seat to thousands of these journeys.
I’ve watched businesses launch, grow, struggle, recover, expand, change direction and eventually be sold.
I’ve seen clients experience the excitement of their first employee, the pride of buying their first premises, the stress of cashflow difficulties and the satisfaction of finally achieving financial security.
The numbers tell us what happened.
But they don’t tell us why it matters.
Behind every turnover figure is a family.
Behind every profit figure is a sacrifice.
Behind every balance sheet is a dream.
That’s why our role has never simply been about preparing accounts or submitting tax returns.
Those things are important, but they’re only part of the picture.
Our real job is to help business owners write the next chapter.
To provide clarity when things are uncertain.
To help them avoid mistakes.
To support them through challenges.
To celebrate their successes.
And to give them confidence about what comes next.
The best stories are never written alone.
Authors have editors.
Athletes have coaches.
Businesses have advisers.
And every great business story needs a good accountant.
At Seagrave French, we are privileged to become part of our clients’ stories.
Not just for a year.
Not just for a tax return.
But often for decades.
Watching chapters unfold.
Helping write new ones.
And doing everything we can to help ensure the ending is a successful one.
Because whilst numbers matter, people matter more.
And every number tells a story.
