Keeping up with UK company law changes can feel overwhelming, but don’t worry—we’ve got you covered! The UK government is rolling out new Companies House regulations under the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency (ECCT) Act, and we’re here to help you navigate them with ease. Here’s what you need to know and how it may affect your business.
What’s Changed Since March 2024?
Companies House introduced a few key rules on 4 March 2024:
- Registered Office Address: Your company must always have an “appropriate address.” This means it must be a physical address where official documents can be received and acknowledged.
- Registered Email Address: Every company must provide and maintain a registered email address with Companies House to ensure important updates aren’t missed.
- Compliance Enforcement: Companies House penalties may apply if your business fails to meet these requirements.
These Companies House updates are designed to improve business transparency and ensure companies stay accountable. If you haven’t updated your details yet, now’s the time!
Avoid Financial Penalties for Late or Missing Filings
From October 2024, Companies House will begin issuing financial penalties for UK businesses that fail to meet filing deadlines—such as the annual confirmation statement. More penalties will be introduced over time, so it’s essential to keep up with your filings to avoid unnecessary fines.

Identity Verification: Get Ready Now
A big change is coming: soon, everyone who owns, manages, or controls a UK company will need to verify their identity. This means all directors, business owners, and persons with significant control (PSC) must confirm who they are using GOV.UK One Login or an Authorised Corporate Service Provider (ACSP).
To prepare: ✔️ Check that Companies House has the correct details for you and other key people in your company. ✔️ Make sure the names and dates of birth match official identity documents. ✔️ Update any incorrect details now—because once this becomes mandatory, non-compliance could lead to fines or even prevent you from managing your company.
Changes to Filing Company Accounts
If your company files accounts online, take note:
- The online accounts and Company Tax Return service will close on 31 March 2026.
- All businesses will need to use software-based company accounts filing instead.
- The transition will take place over the next couple of years, and Companies House will give at least 21 months’ notice before this becomes mandatory.
The good news is that many businesses are already using Companies House-approved software to file, and there are plenty of options available. If you haven’t switched, now is a great time to explore your options and make the transition smooth.
